“Birth of a Beauty” – ad for plastic surgery

“Birth of a Beauty” is that kind of a drama you watch and forget. It is entertaining to watch as it is a comedy and there are some really funny parts. It also has a lot of drama which almost made this drama a ‘makjang’.

The plot is really ‘Korean’ and what I mean by that is how this drama endorses plastic surgery. I was left with the impression that with plastic surgery you cannot only change one’s looks but also their character. It was like when you’re fat you can be humiliated and stepped on and when you’re pretty and thin you have the guts to face those bullies and ‘rule the world’ thus HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY (it can pass as an ad for it). It’s so stereotypic and I hate that, makes me wonder how shallow people can be. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against plastic surgery but promoting it as an only option to get your life together…please, how little must you think of yourself?

What saved this drama from “Hotel King’s” fate was the comedy. The funny comical parts were well executed and well placed. It made the plot that is not so original, worth watching and made you look forward to those bits. The mystery part was kind of ‘meh’ for me. I could predict what was going to happen regarding the ‘revenge’ part, therefore it did not give anything to the drama nor did it take away from it.

Joo Sang Wook and Han Ye Seul nailed it with the comedy and their chemistry was also on-point. Jung Gyu Woon and Wang Ji Hye made quite the couple, you can’t help but dislike them, therefore I would say they did their job well. I feel like Ha Jae Suk got played big time. I wish she had more scenes where she could have showed the badass side of Sa Geum Ran. She only got to play the victim but I’m sure she would have nailed the strong female character. (I wish she could have kimchi slapped the mother-in-law or the husband. #JusticeforHaJaeSuk)

In the end, it is an okay drama. It’s very stereotypical and predictable, however, the comedy keeps it alive somehow. If you want to watch something light or are looking for a drama to play in the background then it’s a good choice.
